4 Places To Go Leaf Peeping in Colorado

As the air cools, the aspens are turning to gold across the Rockies. Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat, a family adventure, or a quick day trip, we’ve made a list of four destinations to peep at leaves this fall.

Crested Butte

In this funky ski town, leaves typically peak the last two weeks in September and the first week of October, but as we all know, Colorado weather can be unpredictable. Take a drive up Kebler Pass, home to one of the largest aspen groves in the world.

Where to Stay: Your best bet in Crested Butte is to book one of the cute vacation rentals downtown near Elk Avenue, however, if a romantic cabin is more your style, try the Pioneer Guest Cabins outside of town.

Trail Ridge Road

This incredible drive over the Continental Divide in Rocky Mountain National Park has a maximum elevation of 12,183 feet! Be ready for amazing vistas of fall foliage, colder weather given the high altitude, and most important, do not forget your camera.

Where to Stay: The Taharaa Mountain Lodge in Estes Park is a rustic and charming bed and breakfast surrounded by panoramic views of mountain tops and wilderness.

Buffalo Pass

Buffalo Pass just outside of Steamboat Springs offers spectacular views of the aspens and the Yampa Valley below. While any type of vehicle can get up to the Dry Lake parking lot to hike the short but aptly named Panorama Trail, if you aim to go higher, you may want four wheel drive.

Where to Stay: The iconic Rabbit Ears Motel is on the left as you enter downtown Steamboat Springs. Right on the Yampa River, it offers easy access to Buffalo Pass and restaurants and shops downtown.

Peak to Peak Highway

Don’t have time to make a full weekend of it? Drive the Peak to Peak Highway, a scenic byway that runs 55 miles through some of the Front Range’s most eccentric mountain towns — Central City, Blackhawk, Rollinsville, Nederland, and Ward. Just beware, this route gets crowded during prime leaf viewing season!

Fall weekend getaways are short, but can be very sweet. If you are looking for a place to escape with friends or family, add one of these destinations to your calendar. When you return, sign up for an Endless Pass and receive $35 OFF (Reg. $165) our Interior Pro service, a complete interior detail to get your car ready for the week!
